La American Dialect Society ha decretato come parola dell’anno: “App”.

“App” – abbreviazione di “Application”, riferito al software per computer – è diventato il termine col quale si indica un’applicazione per dispositivi mobili.

Con 69 voti, ha battuto in finale altre parole, altrettato note, come “junk”, “WikiLeaks”, “trend,” e “nom”.

La American Dialect Society ogni anno nomina la “parola dell’anno”…nel 2001 fu “9/11”.

Allan Metcalf, Executive Secretary ha così commentato: “I think this past year there wasn’t anything clearly dominant, but there’s no question ‘app’ is a very powerful word.”

“Tweet” e “Google” sono stati “Word of the Year” e “Word of the Decade.”

Alcuni precedenti vincitori sono stati: “millennium bug” (1997), “information superhighway” (1993) e “web” (word of the 1990s).
